There is no perfect moment

Why It Matters

Readiness is uneven. People, organizations, and systems arrive at different places. Some are eager; others are wary. Some carry fresh wounds; others have had years to process. The work is not waiting for ideal conditions. It is sensing what kind of conversation this moment can hold—and designing accordingly.

A group in crisis needs something different than a group in reflection. An organization just beginning to ask questions needs something different than one deep in implementation. It's always the right moment for something. The question is what.

What This Looks Like

The Movement for Community-led Development wanted to wait for "the right time" to address student food insecurity at Adjarra College - when administrators were more receptive, when students had less to risk, when political conditions felt more favorable. They realized waiting for perfect conditions meant never starting. Instead, they assessed what this moment could hold: administrators were anxious but curious, students were eager. They designed preparatory sessions for administrators—not to coach "what to say" but to help them understand the purpose and sit with discomfort before entering the room.  - MCLD, Benin

Try This

Before any gathering, assess readiness at multiple levels: individual, group, institutional. Ask: What kind of conversation can this moment actually hold? What would help people arrive ready? What might need to wait? What is possible now—even if it's not everything?

Watch For

Assuming that enthusiasm equals readiness. Also watch for conflating "willingness to participate" with "capacity to participate well." And watch for waiting so long for perfect conditions that the moment passes entirely.
