With the correct conditions in place, systems stories can support healing in a system
Why It Matters
True transformation in systems comes through shifts in the relational fabric of a system. People from various parts of the system who aren’t connected must become connected. Systems storytelling is an approach that carries the unique quality of enabling people to share their story of what’s happening in the system in ways that can elicit empathy and connection from other system participants. At its best, system storytelling can change how people in the system view one another. Being seen and responded to in positive ways can bring about healing. It also can create new energy and openings for restoration in a system.
What This Looks Like
A social change organization worked with survivors, mostly women, of domestic violence. These women had experienced harm from the government, health, and social agencies that provide a range of services to them including: crisis support, child protection, legal and law enforcement intervention, emotional and psychological care, and building personal empowerment. Said another way, the agencies who were supposed to help these women through their trauma were causing them further harm.
The organization provided guidance, support for overall wellbeing and a safer environment for survivors to share their stories with the heads of government agencies. In this process they prepared the women for being able to tell their stories. They also guided agency heads on how to listen carefully and deeply. In some instances, co-creation between survivors and agency heads took place and this led to changes in the system to better support survivors. Though not universal, healing took place with the survivors and even with some agency heads who shared with the women their own stories of abuse and trauma. Stories brought about healing, and healing brought about systems change.
Try This
Before any storytelling process that touches trauma, ask: Are the conditions right for this to support healing? What would need to be true? If the conditions aren't present, what needs to change—or should we not proceed? Be conscious of power dynamics and ensure those with power are open to the process.
Common Missteps to Tend
Assuming that invitation equals safety. Also watch for using healing language to justify extraction, or for promising transformation you can't actually support.
